Today, as we join the international community in observing World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, we are reminded that behind many scams and false promises lies a hidden reality of exploitation.
This year's theme, "Trapped Behind the Scam",highlights the increasingly deceptive methods used by traffickers to lure victims. Through fake job offers, misleading advertisements, online relationships and promises of a better future, vulnerable individuals can become trapped in situations of exploitation.
Human trafficking is the exploitation of people for someone else's gain. It strips victims of their freedom, dignity and fundamental human rights. Children are among the most vulnerable victims of this crime. Every child deserves to grow up in a safe environment, protected from abuse, exploitation and violence. Yet traffickers deliberately target children through grooming, manipulation, deception and coercion, both online and within our communities. Children may be exploited for sexual purposes, forced into criminal activities, subjected to labour or other forms of abuse. The exploitation of a child is one of the gravest violations of human rights and an attack on the future of our nation. Protecting our children is not only the responsibility of the authorities. It is a shared responsibility for every parent, guardian, teacher and member of our community.
Seychelles remains firmly committed to preventing and combating trafficking in persons through strong partnerships, effective legislation, victim support services and coordinated efforts among government agencies, law enforcement, civil society organisations and international partners.
The fight against trafficking requires the involvement of every member of our community. We must remain alert to suspicious situations, educate ourselves and our families about the risks of online scams and deceptive recruitment practices and speak out against all forms of exploitation. If you suspect that a child or any individual may be a victim of trafficking, do not remain silent. Reporting your concerns could save a life.
On this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, let us remember that trafficking often begins with a promise but ends in exploitation. Together, let us expose the scams, protect our children, support victims and build a society where every individual is treated with dignity, respect and freedom.

International Firefighters Day was established following the tragic loss of five brave firefighters in Australia in December 1998. The call to honour their memory, made by Australian firefighter JJ Edmondson, resonated globally and led to this annual observance. This date fittingly coincides with the feast day of Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters, symbolizing strength, courage, and selflessness.
In Seychelles, your role extends far beyond responding to emergencies. You are the frontline guardians of our nation, educating the public, preventing disasters, and providing strength in moments of crisis. This year's theme, “Protecting Our Communities and Dedication to Service,” perfectly reflects the values you embody every day.
Your work demands bravery in the face of danger, professionalism in the face of chaos, and compassion in the face of loss. It is not merely a job; it is a calling, one that you answer with remarkable resilience, humility, and integrity.
